Our main activity this week will be a group project on an explorer. Groups will each be given a different explorer to research and requirements of what they need to present. During presentations, the class will be expected to take notes on required information. The group project will be a major assessment grade, but there will also be grades taken for participation in the project based on a rubric as well as a reflection and for taking notes/being an active listener during presentations.
As we study and learn about European explorers, we will not only be looking at where they come from and where they explored, but also their motivations and interactions with the environment and indigenous cultures. This year in social studies students will not simply be required to learn and memorize facts, but they are expected to be able to apply this information and interpret and analyze the consequences and impact of historical events on the environment and various cultures, which has ultimately led to where we are today.
We will be going more quickly through information and taking notes on facts based on explorers. Then we will be practicing analyzing different primary and secondary sources and writing in response to "big questions." It is important that students recognize the importance of completely answering questions and delving into what is really being asked in order to determine if they are being complete in their answer. Also, there are many class discussions that are necessary for students to fully participate in. These discussions help extend our thinking and encourage learning beyond the facts.
