We began working specifically with fractions last week and will continue working with fractions and how to solve all operations with fractions as well as continue with word problems and problem solving. To begin with, we will be making equivalent fractions using models and then using this skill to use modeling equivalent fractions to add and subtract fractions.
A complete solution sentence that restates the question is ALWAYS expected for a word problem, whether it's homework, classwork, or tests. If a question says to explain or justify your answer, the student is expect to provide a thorough mathematical explanation as to why they performed whatever operations or did whatever they did to solve the problem (and what makes what they did mathematically correct). This is proving to be a struggle on tests and a big reason why many students are getting points off. Make sure to ask your child WHY they did certain things to solve a problem and the reason that is necessary. They should be able to explain to you how the place value system works and why they are doing each step along the way. All work should always be shown.
We will also be having different activities and assignments by class or even by students. This helps to differentiate and meet each child's needs. Although each student must master ALL fifth grade skills, some may need different activities or a different time frame. Homework is usually assigned daily and students are informed and directions given in class. Please check your child's agenda.
